Blown Away

I am mesmerized by the news coverage of the horrible disaster that has overtaken the gulf coast. I am blown away by the powerful forces of nature, as it has blown away cars, boats, houses, buildings , cities, and people. I fear there are many more casualties from Katrina than we are aware of today. My heart aches for the millions of people that are suffering today, this very moment, as I casually blog. I have no problems and luckily, have never had problems of this magnitude.

God, be with them.

Pony Boy

I know this guy that sports a mohawk and lives in the apartments I deliver mail to. The other day I saw this little boy who was about two or three at the apartments who also had a mohawk. I immediately knew that he must be the son of the man with a mohawk.

A few days later I was talking to the mohawk man, I told him I met his son. He told me that his son told him he looked like a horsey and he wanted to be a horsey, too.

Hence, another mohawk was spawned.

Texas Heat Em

To all my friends that have left this great state or moved to the other side of Texas, be glad. It is unbearably hot here in Dallas. Whether you are going from air conditioned building to your car; retrieving the mail; taking the trash out; lying on a raft in the pool; or spending the entire day outside, it is too damn hot this month.

Senior-itis

For a period of years in the seventies the legal drinking age was 18. I turned 18 in January of my senior year in high school. I rushed to the local liquor store to buy some booze legally for the first time. I still remember going to the cash register with my bottle of Sloe Gin anxious to yank out my I.D. The clerk didn't bat an eye as he took my money and he didn't ask to see my I.D. I was both disappointed and excited. Disappointed that he didn't ask, yet excited that I looked old enough.

Yesterday I met some work friends at Furr's cafeteria for lunch. We were comparing our receipts and questioning why they differed when it was an all-you-can-eat situation. The top of my receipt said senior. I was given the senior discount! I was both disappointed and excited. Disappointed that I looked old enough, yet excited about the perks to come with "senior discounts".

Karma?

After shopping at Pet's Mart on Sunday. I loaded up the many cans of cat and dog food and got in the truck and looked over the receipt. I saw that I had not been charged for one $.69 can of dog food out of the twenty three that I purchased or shall we say , thought I bought. At that moment I made the conscious decision not to return to the store and pay for the unnoticed can, knowing that going back was the right thing to do. I did not make the right choice and.......................

my bench was stolen on Monday

Talking Dog

I just saw a dog on TV that talks. The pug says "I love you". I am jealous.

We have seven dogs that will never amount to anything. Five can beg. Seven can bark. Five chase cats...our cats. One can sing in tongues. Two can smile(occasionally on command). One loves to swim and lie on a float. One is aggressively friendly. Three bite. One can bark until I start doing tricks. One screams bloody murder if you pick her up and is just an all around freaky dog. Five can fetch, but only one will bring it back to you. Five can sit on command with appropriate rewards. One can lick you all over if given the chance. Two can scratch you with their paws until you scratch or pet them. Six alert us to TV dogs and TV doorbells.

To not know them is to love them, my friends will probably say. I, on the other hand, simply adore them in spite of their talents.

The Park Bench

When we moved into this house 9 years ago, I bought a park bench for $39 . It came in a box and I had to assemble it. I applied a thick coat of marine quality polyurethane to protect the wood. Every spring I sanded it and revarnished it which kept it looking new and shiny. It has been in my front yard year round and has become a popular resting spot for us as well as friends and neighbors. Today I walked out the front door to get the mail and immediately missed my beloved bench. It was gone...poof!!!

I hope the thief...

enjoys it

and tends to it

as much as I have

Twenties versus Forties

I have several nephews that I love dearly . The two that are in their thirties are on the right track. They seem to be enjoying the ride we call life. The four that are in their twenties are really struggling. A couple of them have made some life changing mistakes and are learning some hard lessons . I wish I could figure out a way to steer them out of the confusion/depression of young adulthood and convince them that with a little effort there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Personally, I would hate to be that young again. Life gets better and easier for most of us. The wisdom of age guides us through the fog and equips us with the tools to survive the rough spots.

If only I could zap them ahead ten years.
