50 sense

I have been wanting to plant a tree in my front yard. In preparation for this, I have been studying trees in the neighborhoods and weighing the pros and cons of the various types. I had pretty much narrowed down my choices to the beautiful and majestic oak. Then the other day as I walked through a yard I was bonked on the head by a falling acorn and quickly noticed a lawn covered in acorns. This was definitely a negative, but I remembered hearing that an oak tree doesn't produce acorns until it is fifty years old. I figured that since I will soon be old enough to produce acorns myself, the chances of me being inconvenienced by an acorn covered lawn was slim to none. Now with thoughts of my own age on the forefront, I began to wonder if the tree would reach those majestic proportions in my lifetime or forever look like a sapling to me.

Then I read a quote by Thomas Jefferson in one of my favorite blogs, www.timegoesby.net.

"Too old to plant trees for my own gratification, I shall do it for my posterity."
